Our School
A Dual Language Immersion Magnet School

We are embarking on an exciting transformation into a dual language immersion school. This shift opens the door for our students to think globally, communicate confidently and grow academically in two languages.
In a dual language immersion environment, students don't just learn a second language - they learn through it. That means they build strong literacy and academic skills in both English and Spanish, while developing cultural understanding that sets them apart in an increasingly connected world.

Learning With Purpose
We bring a different kind of learning experience — one that encourages curiosity, inquiry and real-world thinking. Instead of memorizing facts, students explore big ideas, ask thoughtful questions and make connections across subjects and cultures. From an early age, they learn to see themselves as capable, compassionate problem-solvers with the tools to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
We are proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. We prepare our students to be college- and career-ready. AVID has five principles, which fall under the acronym WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.

Building Community Through Stratton University
We believe in fostering connections through team-building activities centered around the school community. We prioritize collaborative experiences to strengthen school-community connections. Through "Stratton University," our school is divided into colleges with every student, teacher and school leader belonging to a different college, creating a sense of pride and unity across all grade levels:
- College of Leadership
- College of Determination
- College of Perseverance
- College of Innovation
- College of Integrity
- College of Resilience
International Baccalaureate Candidate

Stratton Elementary is a Candidate School for the Early Years programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Taylor Stratton believes is important for our students.
Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit the International Baccalaureate website.
Legendary History
Stratton Elementary has a long history of serving the Madison community for more than a century. The first Taylor Stratton School opened in 1910, replacing a one-room schoolhouse, and was named for James Taylor Stratton, a dedicated member of the county board of education.
James Taylor Stratton was a descendant of Madison Stratton, who arrived to the area with his two brothers in 1840. The Madison community grew around the railroad station named in Madison Stratton's honor. In 1936, the original railroad station frame building was replaced with a new brick structure. The early Stratton schools were on Gallatin Pike.
Stratton has hosted two U.S. presidents. In November 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the school, and in July 2015, Stratton hosted a visit by President Barack Obama, whose signature remains on one of the walls.
Our school motto is "Excellence Always on Purpose Every Day." Our school colors are red, white, and blue and our mascot is the Eagle.
