Stratton: Where Eagles Soar

Excellence On Purpose, Every Day

Stratton Elementary serves more than 500 Pre-K through 5th-grade students, instilling in them a love of learning and preparing them for middle school and beyond.

Our students begin their days with English Language Arts instruction, followed by Math and Related Arts like art, music and physical education. Science and social studies are integrated with additional English language arts studies, ensuring the importance of reading and writing are emphasized throughout the entire day. Social and Emotional learning and technology are incorporated into the daily curriculum, rounding out our core academics in a SEL context.

We also offer GATE to challenge our gifted and high-achieving students. Our on-site nursing staff is also provided by Vanderbilt.

To support physical fitness, we have one program that offer students exercise: Girls On the Run. Girls on the Run teaches girls the importance of goal-setting, personal fitness and positive self-esteem-all as they train together for a 5K race.

We also offer family skating where students and parents can meet and greet each other. One of our most-loved events is our 5th Grade celebration at the end of every year, complete with graduation caps, a walk across the stage, public speakers, live songs and more.

Our educational support extends out into the community, too. Our families are able to participate in a variety of trainings throughout the year.

History of Stratton Elementary

Stratton Elementary has a long history of serving the Madison community. The first Taylor Stratton School opened in 1910, replacing a one-room schoolhouse. The new school was named for James Taylor Stratton, a county board of education member.

Stratton was a descendant of Madison Stratton, who came to the area with his two brothers in 1840 and for whom the railroad station that resulted in the start of the Madison community was named. That frame building was replaced in 1936 with a new brick building. The early Stratton schools were on Gallatin Pike.

Facts about Stratton Elementary

The school has hosted two U.S. presidents. In November 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the school, and in July 2015, Stratton hosted a visit by President Barack Obama, whose signature remains on one of the walls.
